Extra spacing between paragraphs adds emphasis and makes a document easier to read. You can adjust the line spacing in a paragraph to be more tight, or more open.

Thanks for your perfect advice!! OK, I tried all the workarounds, and none of them worked. Finally, this is what worked for me. I located the normal. Locate the file. Open the normal. Modify your settings, font, and paragraph in the regular way. Save your file. You will have to name it normal1. Rename your original normal. Rename your new normal1. After these gyrations, when I open a new Word document, it opens in the correct format with single spacing and my Times New Roman 12 pt.
