Once upon a time, way before Windows started removing DVD codecs from Windows and selling it as an app themselves, apps like PowerDVD were usually bundled free with video editing software. As far as PhotoDirector, it’s an entry-level editor that has everything home users need for photo editing. It doesn’t compete with the likes of Photoshop and Lightroom but it’s fine for general use.

In addition to good photo management, it has a nice intuitive interface with plenty of easy to locate effects and filters that are a lot of fun. The editing and adjustment tools are also much easier to use when compared to the more professional programs. It’s very user friendly and puts Photoshop type editing power into the hands of even a novice.

As far as the more popular pro features, PhotoDirector supports layers but not plug-ins. PowerDirector supports plug-ins and has some really nice third-party plug-ins out there. This dual pack bundle is a good deal if you need both a video and photo editor. If you simply need a video editor, I’d suggest The Ultimate version of PowerDirector rather than this combo or the Ultra version. All three are easy to use and offer a wealth of features. It’s really going to come down to what features users want and actually need.

Some programs do certain tasks better than others and some have more capabilities. PhotoDirector is straightforward and everything is very easy to find but some of the other programs are really nice as well. The ease of use gap between PhotoDirector and other photo editors like Photoshop Elements is much narrower than the gap between PowerDirector and other video editors. I’m the ultimate amateur when it comes to photo editing. Currently, I use Photoshop Elements 10 to work on photos. But, I don’t use a tenth or even one-hundredth of the features, I’m sure.

Primarily, I’m taking photos of people and giving photos as gifts or posting to social media. I like the recipient to see their very best and mildly improved self! I really can’t speak to PowerDirector 16, as I’m not into working with video. I like how the photos are imported into the program as thumbnails, rather than listed as file names.

In Photoshop, the thumbnails don’t appear until after I’ve worked on the photos. I have to click between file names to find the one I want. Perhaps there’s a way to do that in Photoshop, but it’s not the most user-friendly program and I don’t spend a lot of time trying to figure it out. To work on the things I usually alter, like color saturation, it’s a simple matter of clicking on a slider, as in Photoshop.

I like the “People Beautifier” feature, if used in moderation. There’s no sense creating an entirely false photo of someone. The feature has skin smoothing, skin tone adjustments and face and body reshaping. I liked this feature, especially as I like to remove anything that a viewer might focus on, like acne or wrinkles. In Photoshop, I have to use spot removal to gradually remove these imperfections.

The content aware feature is supposed to remove objects or people you don’t want in a photo — I found that, like in Photoshop, it works best against a uniform background, like the grass of a ball field. But, in general, I use spot removal to remove small, distracting objects, like a water bottle or litter.

Also, I merged photos into a slideshow for an awards banquet. I like the Color Splash feature that allows you to easily turn a photo into black-and-white, leaving a selected portion in color.

That’s really great for highlighting children and brightly colored objects, like balloons. As to user friendliness, PhotoDirector takes some getting used to — the learning curve is similar to Photoshop. I wish someone would come up with something that’s as user friendly as Picmonkey. I used that site extensively until they went fee-only last month. Of course, it doesn’t have all the features of PhotoDirector, but for quick and easy editing of photos and creating of collages to post to social media, it was the best.

BeFunky is adequate for that purpose, but it has fewer features and options. Also, using PhotoDirector with Windows 7 was a little frustrating, as it was balky and froze up a few times.
